CranioSacral Therapy for TMJ, Headaches & Migraines

Gentle, whole-body support for jaw pain, headaches, migraine, and chronic neck tension in North Beach, Maryland.

Jaw pain. Pressure around the temples or behind the eyes. A neck that never seems to fully release. Headaches that keep returning. Migraine that disrupts your work, your plans, and your life.

Sometimes the place where you feel the pain is only part of the story.

The jaw, head, neck, and nervous system are deeply interconnected. Tension or restriction in one area can influence how the others move and function. Research outside CST also supports meaningful relationships among temporomandibular dysfunction, cervical impairment and headache, including evidence that addressing both the jaw and cervical region can improve outcomes.

CranioSacral Therapy takes a gentle, whole-body approach. Rather than focusing only on the symptom or trying to force painful tissues to change, I listen to the body and work with the patterns of tension and restriction I find. This may include work with the jaw and face, the bones and tissues of the cranium, the neck and shoulders, the dural membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the sacrum, or other areas of the body that are involved in the pattern.

The goal isn’t simply to chase the pain. It’s to give the body an opportunity to reorganize the patterns that may be contributing to it.

When the Jaw, Neck & Head Are Part of the Same Pattern

The temporomandibular joints do not function in isolation. The jaw works in relationship with the muscles and fascia of the face and neck, the upper cervical spine, the cranial base, and the nervous system. When tension or restriction develops within this interconnected system, symptoms may be felt somewhere other than where the pattern began.

For some people, that can look like a combination of jaw tension or pain, clenching or grinding, limited or uncomfortable jaw movement, neck and shoulder tension, headaches, facial pain or pressure, and migraine.

CranioSacral Therapy allows me to look beyond the location of the symptom. Rather than treating the jaw, neck or head as separate problems, I can work with the relationships among them and follow patterns of tension and restriction through the body.

This is particularly relevant when symptoms are persistent or recurring. Research on CranioSacral Therapy for chronic neck pain has found clinically meaningful reductions in pain compared with a light-touch sham treatment, along with improvements in movement, functional disability and physical quality of life. Those improvements remained significant at three-month follow-up.

TMJ & Jaw Tension

The temporomandibular joints are influenced by much more than the jaw itself. The muscles of the face and neck, the temporal bones, the cranial base, posture, and patterns of tension throughout the body can all affect how comfortably the jaw moves and functions.

People with TMJ dysfunction may experience jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping, difficulty opening the mouth comfortably, clenching or grinding, facial tension, ear or temple pain, headaches, or tension extending into the neck and shoulders.

CranioSacral Therapy allows me to work gently with the jaw while also exploring the structures and patterns that may be influencing it. A session might involve the temporomandibular joints directly, the temporal bones and cranial base, the muscles and fascia of the face and neck, or restrictions elsewhere in the body. What I work with depends on what your individual system presents.

Emerging research is beginning to examine this relationship. A randomized study involving people with migraine and temporomandibular symptoms found that participants receiving CranioSacral Therapy experienced improvements in TMJ-related symptoms, migraine pain and disability, along with increased cervical range of motion

Headaches & Migraine

Headaches and migraine can be complex, with many possible contributing factors. For some people, tension or restriction through the neck, cranial base, jaw, and surrounding tissues may be part of the larger pattern.

For some people, headaches and migraine occur alongside lingering symptoms of concussion or whiplash, including dizziness, neck tension, and sensory sensitivity. I explore these relationships further in CranioSacral Therapy for Post-Concussion Syndrome & Vertigo.

CranioSacral Therapy does not approach every headache or migraine in the same way. I listen to the individual system and follow the areas of restriction that present themselves. Sometimes that leads directly to the head or neck. Other times, the body leads somewhere less obvious.

The intention is to reduce patterns of tension and restriction, support greater ease within the nervous system, and give the body an opportunity to find a different way of organizing around the symptoms.

There is also encouraging clinical research specifically examining CST for migraine. In a randomized controlled study of people with migraine, participants receiving CranioSacral Therapy experienced significant improvements in pain, frequency of migraine episodes, functional and overall disability, and medication use compared with participants receiving a sham treatment. The improvements were maintained at follow-up.

What to Expect from Your CranioSacral Therapy Session

Your session is individualized to you. CranioSacral Therapy is performed fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table using gentle, light touch. There is no predetermined sequence or protocol. I listen to your body and nervous system and follow what presents during the session.

For TMJ, headache, migraine, or neck pain, that may include work with the jaw, head, neck, shoulders, cranial base, or other areas of the body that are contributing to the pattern. Because the body functions as an interconnected whole, where we begin is not always where the work leads.

I am a Techniques Certified CranioSacral Therapist with extensive training through the Upledger Institute, including advanced CranioSacral Therapy studies throughout North America and Europe . My approach combines skilled therapeutic touch with careful listening to the body, allowing each session to unfold according to the needs of the individual rather than trying to force a particular outcome.

My studio is located in North Beach, Maryland, serving clients from Calvert County, Southern Maryland, and surrounding communities.

If recurring jaw pain, headaches, migraine, or chronic neck tension have not responded fully to the approaches you’ve already tried, CranioSacral Therapy may offer another way of working with the patterns your body is holding.
